Traffic, what does traffic have to do with swimming the channel you might ask. If you have read one of my earlier posts you would have noticed a photo like the one below.
There are some rather large arrows on here that show the traffic seperation scheme that is used in the Dover Straight or English Channel. As I understand it this area is controlled in a similar way to airspace. There is a traffic controller who tells the ships where to go etc., if you need to cross one of these lanes you need to do it at 90 degrees to the flow of traffic and to do it as quickly as possible. This is if you are a boat; if you are not a boat and are swimming what do you do?
I'll be honest, I have no idea. This is one of the many reasons you have to have a Pilot to guide you across the channel. As I mentioned in a previous post mine is a chap called Eddie and his boat is "Anstasia". On the day he will tell me where to go and what to do, hopefully he'll also tell those massive tankers to stay away from me...
